Dreaming of Freedom, part 3

A short google search of the phrase “Freedom Dreaming,” the upcoming conference offered by the NYCDOE The Office of Organizational Development, Talent, and Culture in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging portfolio, returns this result from CUNY Academic Commons website:

  • Freedom Dreaming means actively uplifting the intricately connected and complex lives and stories of Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latin/os/as/x, Arab, Middle Eastern and Multi-ethnic people (from https://freedomdreaming.commons.gc.cuny.edu/about/, retrieved 07/11/23)

Their list seems awfully exclusionary — what about ethnic Jews? — and does not take class or economic status into account.

Could this group from CUNY be the source for the DOE’s conference?

Dreaming of Freedom, part 2

The Freedom Dreaming flyer has this to declare:

Will I be wearing my tie-dye? You bet I will!

Dreaming of Freedom, part 1

This just in (the bold italics are my own):

The Office of Organizational Development, Talent, and Culture in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging portfolio is thrilled to announce our re-scheduled 2nd Annual Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) conference on Friday, July 28th! This year’s conference theme is Freedom Dreaming.  This conference will uplift promising practices from DEIB leaders and include facilitated workshops, keynote speakers, community building, and recognition of individuals and teams committed to ensuring an equitable school system across New York City Public Schools. Throughout the day-long, in-person conference, participants will engage in courageous conversations regarding policy, equity, and belonging within the New York City Public School system to move towards creating change in support of our colleagues, students, and the NYC school communities we serve.

My three initial take-aways are

  • uplift
  • promising practices
  • courageous conversations

If the last two were not alliterative, would they be so good?

Bountiful Barrage of Educational Bureaucratese

I sat through a meeting with higher-ups at the DOE and was subjected to a bit of jargon. How many of these expressions have you heard?

  • alignment and synergy (noun)
  • baseline student knowledge (verb)
  • clean opportunity (noun)
  • crosswalk the standards (verb)
  • ideate (verb)
  • learning accelerators (noun)
  • level settings (verb/noun)
  • make a pitch deck (verb)
  • socialize the idea (verb)
  • thinkings (noun)
  • thought partnership (noun)
  • use case (noun)
  • wonderings (noun)

We Went to Tweed!

The Tweed Courthouse is a stunning building in lower Manhattan, filled with architectural delights. When it was finally renovated back in 2002, it was closed off from the public and occupied by the upper echelons of the Board of Education. (This author briefly worked there during that time.)

Short story long, here are some photos.

DIIT at the Technology Liaison Meeting

We met at BrainPop HQ for a technology liaison meeting. DIIT was there.

Here are some informational slides

Can they Drive Better than they Spell?

Can you find the mistakes on the DOE parking permit website?

“This application enable principals, APs, teachers, and UFT members to require a parking permit for their school” (sic)

On my websites, I ask a coworker who has “fresh eyes” to review the material before/after I post.

Let Them Eat

I saw the sign on the door of this truck. Operative Cake. What could this mean? There was also a smaller sign indicating that it is a DOE vehicle.

We’ll Be Right Back!

A new graphic from the NYCDOE. This one appeared when I could not access the COVID health screening website.

What is up with the scary robot face?

Harshed my Mello

Talk about a downer
