This is on display at Tweed courthouse in NYC, headquarters of the DOE. It looks like a sturdy locker. It reads “Board of Education of the City of New York Bureau of Finance” What do you think was in here? Staff payroll? Keys to the city? Gold bars?

The Tweed Courthouse is a stunning building in lower Manhattan, filled with architectural delights. When it was finally renovated back in 2002, it was closed off from the public and occupied by the upper echelons of the Board of Education. (This author briefly worked there during that time.)
Short story long, here are some photos.
