F Train Blues

Going down, downtown, underground.

Subway Stalactites and Stalagmites!

Yes it is true. On the F train at Bergen Street. The ones dripping down from the top are stalactites (quick trick: the “c” is for “ceiling”) and the ones growing up from the bottom are stalagmites (the “g” is for “ground”). Whether they are actually limestone, or even calcium-based, is anyone’s guess.

BART Train Sounds

Plenty of the students in my district love the sounds of the NYC subways, from the “stand clear of the closing doors” announcements, to the sound of zooming through a tunnel.

Here is the sound the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) subway makes on its way from the San Fransisco airport to the downtown section of the city.

I recorded it on an trip this last midwinter break. To me, it sounds like we are going at three-times the speed of a NYC train.

Subway Special

On the way to a school I saw these trains parked at the 2nd Avenue Subway station.

Water Under the G

I took the G train to 373K today. Down on the tracks, running between the rails as it has done for at least a year, possibly forever, is a little river of water. It is surreal. I have spoken to the token clerk about this and he had no idea when the rupture/leak/water main break — or whatever is causing this ongoing stream — is going to be repaired. Think of the scene in the Japanese movie Sprited Away, when the train tracks are underwater…that is what it reminds me of.
